The George H. Rawls, M.D. Scholarship Fund provides full-tuition grants for minority students to study at the IU School of Medicine. The Rawls Scholarship makes a commitment for four years of study to achieve the degree of medical doctor. Each grant recipient in turn accepts a one-year obligation to provide healthcare to the indigent in Indiana. The Wishard Foundation manages the George H. Rawls, M.D. Scholarship Fund and orchestrates events to raise funds and increase awareness regarding the need for more minority physicians in Indiana.

Statistically, physicians are more likely to practice medicine in the state where they completed their education or residency. In Indiana, for example, more than two-thirds of all physicians completed some portion of their training at the IU School of Medicine. Because the single best remedy for eliminating healthcare disparities in minority populations is to train more minority physicians, it is imperative for Indiana University to attract more minority medical students through attractive aid packages and a diverse culture.

A matching challenge grant from IU Medical Group – Primary Care has provided a unique opportunity to establish a significant endowment for the Rawls Scholarship.

Each year, a dinner is held to honor the scholarship recipients. Please click here to make  a reservation for the annual dinner or, to provide general support to the program click here.
